“Trying to make progress while having a negative mindset is like poking holes in your own boat and blaming the water for getting in.”
We often talk about goals, habits, routines—doing all the “right” things to move forward. But what happens when you’re doing everything right and still feel stuck, overwhelmed, or discouraged?
It’s easy to point fingers at circumstances, other people, or timing. But sometimes, what’s holding us back isn’t outside of us—it’s the mindset we’re bringing to the journey.
If your thoughts are full of self-doubt, resentment, or comparison, it's like trying to sail forward while your boat is slowly sinking. That negativity leaks in through cracks we don’t always realize we’ve made ourselves. And no amount of effort will move you forward if your internal state is constantly working against you.
Mindset First. Then Movement.
Two of the simplest tools I return to over and over—both for myself and the clients I work with—are gratitude journaling and intentional walking.
1. Gratitude Journaling: Anchoring in the Good
Gratitude shifts your focus. It doesn’t ignore what’s hard, but it helps you stay grounded in what is working. When you take a few minutes each morning to write down what you’re thankful for, your mind starts the day looking for the good—rather than scanning for threats or shortcomings.
Journaling also offers clarity. When you write, you get to see your thoughts on paper. You can untangle the knots. You can catch patterns you didn’t notice when they were just swirling around in your head.
Try this:
It’s a simple shift that realigns your thoughts with your values—and quiets the noise.
2. Walking to Clear Your Mind
There’s something about walking—especially without distractions—that resets the mind. It’s movement without pressure. No tracking, no performing, no needing to “do it right.”
It’s in these walks that many people find their thoughts soften. You begin to notice your surroundings. Your breathing evens out. And often, the mental clutter that felt so loud starts to fade.
Even just 10–15 minutes outside can:
When you walk regularly, you’re literally practicing moving forward—and sometimes, that’s the exact reminder your brain needs.
If you want to go further, start here.
Before you add more goals, more pressure, or more hustle—check your mindset. Start the day with three sentences in your journal. Go for a walk without your phone. Breathe.
Your mindset is your boat. Make sure it’s not full of holes. If you need help, reach out! Here at Celebration CrossFit we are ready to help you.
