One of the most common things I hear from members is:
"Jana, I'm working out. I'm eating healthier. Why isn't the fat coming off?"
First, know this—you are not alone.
In fact, most people who come to me for nutrition coaching aren't starting from scratch. They're already making better choices. They're coming to class. They're drinking more water. They're trying.
So why do they still feel stuck?
Usually, it's not because they're doing everything wrong. It's because they're missing one or two small pieces of the puzzle.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that eating "healthy" automatically leads to fat loss. Healthy foods are important, but foods like nuts, avocado, olive oil, smoothies, and granola still contain calories. Nutrition and fat loss go hand in hand, but they're not exactly the same thing.
Another area I often see is weekends. You don't have to eat perfectly, but if you're in a calorie deficit Monday through Friday and then completely abandon your routine on Saturday and Sunday, it becomes much harder to make progress.
Protein is another big one. Most people simply aren't eating as much as they think they are. Getting enough protein helps you stay full, recover from your workouts, and preserve muscle while losing body fat.
And don't forget about movement outside the gym. Your hour in class is incredibly valuable, but so are the thousands of steps you take throughout the rest of the day. Walking more can make a much bigger difference than people realize.
Finally, remember that the scale only tells part of the story. I've worked with clients whose weight barely changed while they lost body fat, gained muscle, and completely changed how they looked and felt. That's why I always encourage people to look at the bigger picture.
If this sounds familiar, don't get discouraged. Most of the time, you don't need to start over—you just need to identify what's missing.
If this article hit home, come find me at the Celebration CrossFit. I genuinely love talking about nutrition, training, and helping people connect the dots when progress feels stalled.
Whether you have a quick question after class or you're looking for more personalized guidance, don't hesitate to reach out. My 1-on-1 nutrition coaching is designed to help you cut through the confusion, build sustainable habits, and create a plan that fits your life—not someone else's.
I'd love to help you reach your goals.
Jana
